Sons and Daughters of foster carers celebrated in Sons and Daughters Month

The Important Role Of Children of Foster Carers

The composition of foster families varies from one household to another. There are many foster carers who already have birth children. In some households the birth children may be in a significantly different age group to the foster children.  Regardless of the age,  whether they are young and still live at home, or are older with families of their own, the contribution that birth children make to a foster placement is invaluable. These amazing children and young people share their parents, their homes, their time, and extend the hand of friendship to children who cannot live with their own families. They are a key component of the success of a placement.

A lot changes once a foster child has joined a household. Some might stay with a foster family for only a few days, but more often foster placements tend to be for several weeks, months or even years. Sometimes children in care can find it easier to settle into a new home if children or young people of the same age are around. Birth children and young people have a foot in both camps; they have an understanding on how their family works whilst on the other hand they understand where foster children and young people are coming from.

In some instances, foster children and young people arrive late in the evening or at the weekend in an emergency, leaving little time to prepare for their arrival. Everyone in the household may get involved in getting the room ready and food and refreshments prepared. We all go through a period of adjusting to a new environment and need to feel safe and secure.  The children of foster carers have a big role in supporting with this to make a foster child feel welcome and accepted in their home.

Being part of a foster family can be a really rewarding experience for birth children and young people. Throughout the month of October, we will be sharing their stories, and talking about the challenges and benefits of growing up in a fostering family. Keep a look out for these stories on our social channels and on our Real Life Stories page.
