At Banya, the wellbeing of our foster carers, staff, and wider community is a top priority. We’re pleased to announce that we now have a qualified Mental Health First Aider as part of our team, further strengthening our commitment to mental health support.
Our team member, Fiona, has completed the FAQ Level 3 Award in Mental Health: Workplace First Aider (RQF)—a qualification designed to equip individuals with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to support mental health in the workplace.
“Dorothy asked if I would consider becoming Mental Health FA for Banya, and there was no hesitation on my part. I strongly believe everyone needs support and advice, whether it’s at work or even when our personal lives impacts our 9-5” – Fiona said.
This role is about more than just offering a listening ear. It involves responding appropriately to mental health episodes, providing practical support and guidance, and helping to create a positive and supportive culture. It also includes supporting individuals as they return to work after experiencing mental health challenges and advising managers on how to handle sensitive situations with care and confidence.
“I will aim to support in every way I can. I specialise in: recognising the early signs and symptoms of common workplace mental health illnesses, providing a supportive, non-judgemental conversation for those who need it, guiding all colleagues to appropriate professional support should it be required, and promoting mental health awareness in the workplace with email updates and my open door.”
We believe that mental health is just as important as physical health—and having a trained Mental Health First Aider is one of the ways we’re turning that belief into action. “Often, all it takes is a simple smile and a ‘how are you doing/feeling today?'”.
