Vivian has been a foster carer for 14 years, fostering 6 young people who have all stayed with her long-term. Today, we’re spotlighting Vivian with some moments from her incredible journey.
Like many carers, Vivian came to fostering to make a difference in a young person’s life. She aims to provide a loving home for vulnerable children and grant them a sense of belonging. Vivian shared with us that fostering was a chance “to open my eyes to the rich cultures of different countries in the world. And I enjoy putting a smile on a child’s face!”
Fostering is of course, not without its challenges. To stay motivated, Vivian “focusses on the value that comes with improving the lives of vulnerable children.”

Vivian took a short break from Banya with another fostering agency but returned to us earlier this year. “Banya provides 24 hour support so I have never been alone since the day I came back. I feel supported by their regular visits and phone calls from their qualified experienced social workers, and Banya’s comprehensive training programme helped me overcome challenges and celebrate successes in my fostering journey.
“Banya’s structured foster carer support group meetings are great spaces to interact and share experiences with other foster carers – and the organised trips and activities has been another space have been excellent for the entire family.”
For new foster carers, Vivian offers her advice and a key memory of her fostering experience:
“Remain positive even when things are difficult. Good listening, flexibility and respect go a long way to reach mutual grounds of understanding and compromise. The young people in our care suffer from abuse, anxiety, separation, loss and trauma, so do your best to be sensitive, compassionate and nurturing.
“Work in partnership with all those involved in the child’s life, follow the day to day care plan, and be an advocate on their behalf. Don’t forget to enjoy their company and have a good sense of humour!

“One of my foster sons has just had a baby with his girlfriend, making me a very special grandma! At the baby shower, my foster son asked me to stand up and I thought he was going to propose to his girlfriend. Instead he held my hands up high and told everyone that he is who he is today because of me. Everyone in the room started an applause with bright smiles across their faces. It was such a fantastic joy – and an introduction to his girlfriend’s parents in a way I will never forget.”
Beyond foster care, Vivian enjoys reading, experimenting with different recipes and practicing yoga. Her routines help her to start the day on a positive note, to refresh herself and prepare for a day of caring for people and children.
