When a foster child leaves your home, it can feel strange, even if you knew it was coming. For many weeks, months or even years, they’ve been part of your family. They’ve shared in the routines, the meals, the daily life that makes a household.
This November, during National Care Leavers Month (#NCLM), it’s a timely moment to acknowledge the experience of carers as children move on and the emotions that come with saying goodbye. Even when a placement ends because a child is going back to family, moving to adoption, or simply reaching an age where they are leaving home to start their own life, it can still leave a gap. You might feel a mix of emotions: pride in who they’re becoming, sadness that they’re leaving, maybe even relief if the placement was challenging at times — and all of that is completely normal.
Adjusting to Change
It’s important to remember that your foster child or young person is feeling the transition too. Even if they’re leaving for something positive, it can be stressful to move on from people and a household they’ve come to trust. They might be anxious, excited, unsure, or all of these at once. The goodbye can be emotional for them even when it’s expected.
Your own children also feel the change. They’ve lost a brother or sister, someone they may have grown close to and shared their daily lives with. And partners or other family members may react in their own way. It’s normal for the household to take time to adjust.
It helps to give yourself space to acknowledge what you’re feeling. Talking to other carers, your social worker, or a support group can help. You don’t need to pretend it’s easy or brush it off. Taking time to process is part of being ready for the next placement, whenever that might be.
The Difference You’ve Made
Even if the child has only been with you for a short time, what you’ve given them — stability, care, a sense of family — stays with them. And if they’ve been with you until adulthood, you’ve been part of shaping who they are as they leave to build their own life. That matters.
Support from Banya
Goodbyes are never easy, even when they’re part of a child’s natural next step. At Banya, we support foster families through these transitions every step of the way — helping your household adjust, providing guidance on managing the practical and emotional challenges, and making sure you don’t feel alone.
Our team works closely with carers, children, and families to ensure each move is as smooth as possible. Whether it’s helping prepare a child for independence, offering support to your own children, or providing one-to-one guidance for you as a carer, we’re here to make these changes manageable. And when the time is right, you may welcome another child into your home, carrying with you the experience, patience, and understanding you’ve gained.
