Foster Carer and Shared Lives Carer, Alistair

Meet Alistair & Ben. Continuing Our FCF25 Mini-Series: The Power of Relationships

As part of this year’s Foster Care Fortnight theme, The Power of Relationships, we’re proud to share the inspiring story of Alistair, a foster carer and Shared Lives carer with Banya, and Ben, a young man who first joined their family as a foster child and has since transitioned into the Banya Shared Lives Scheme.

The Banya Shared Lives Scheme, launched in 2010 offers a family-based, community-supported model for adults aged 18 and over, including those with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health needs, or sensory impairments, allowing them to live in a homely environment and enjoy a fuller, more independent life.

Ben’s journey is a powerful example of how the Shared Lives programme supports young people leaving care to build confidence, develop life skills, and make their own choices—with carers like Alistair providing guidance every step of the way.

Watch the video to hear from Alistair and Ben about how strong, supportive relationships continue to shape positive outcomes long after fostering ends.

At Banya, we believe everyone deserves the same rights and opportunities to thrive. Thank you to Alistair and Ben for sharing their valuable insights on the lasting impact of care and connection.
