Tips for foster parents on helping foster children with the return to school

Getting Ready To Go Back to School: Tips for Foster Families

The summer holidays can fly by in a blur of days out, lazy mornings and family time. But before we know it, September is around the corner — and that means back to school! For foster children, this can bring up a mix of feelings. Some might be excited to see friends again, while others may feel nervous about new teachers, routines or standing out.

A little preparation can go a long way in helping them feel settled and confident. Here are some simple things you, as foster carers, can do over the next few days:

Get organised together

  • Uniform check: Make sure everything fits and is ready. A fresh jumper or a pair of school shoes can really boost confidence.
  • School bag and supplies: Go through any book lists or equipment lists and pick up what’s needed. Having the right pens, pencils or PE kit helps children feel included and ready to join in.
  • Label it up: Labelling clothes and bags avoids stress if things go missing.

Ease back into routines

  • Start reintroducing earlier bedtimes and wake-ups so the first week back isn’t too much of a shock.
  • Try to keep mealtimes and evenings calm — it helps children feel grounded and secure.

Talk about it

  • Chat about the positives: favourite subjects, fun activities, or seeing friends.
  • Ask how they’re feeling — sometimes a simple “Are you looking forward to it?” opens the door to worries you can gently reassure them about.

If it’s a new school…

  • Do a practice run of the journey together.
  • If possible, walk past the school or visit beforehand so it feels more familiar.

Work with the school

Keep in touch with teachers and support staff so they know about any extra worries or needs. They’ll usually be more than happy to help make the start of term a little easier.

Going back to school is a big moment — but with a bit of planning, encouragement and support, you can help your foster child walk through those gates feeling ready, included and confident.
