Proof Care Leavers Benefit from Support

When a young person leaves the care of a loving family, we often talk about the “care cliff.” It’s that daunting moment when the structured support of a foster home falls away, and they are expected to navigate the world as adults, sometimes overnight.

For most of us, our early twenties were cushioned by a “bank of mum and dad”, a bit of help with a rental deposit, a new laptop for uni, or a safety net when an unexpected bill landed. But for care leavers, that safety net often isn’t there.

A groundbreaking study titled “Cash Transfers for Care Leavers,” published in March 2026 by King’s College London and the Centre for Homelessness Impact, has just proven something we’ve always believed: When we trust and empower young people, they thrive.

The Power of a “No Strings” Boost

The study followed over 300 care leavers, some of whom were given a one-off financial grant of £2,000. There were no complicated rules or hoops to jump through, just a gesture of trust.

The results were nothing short of inspiring:

  • A Place to Call Home: Those who received the grant were significantly less likely to experience homelessness or “sofa-surfing.”
  • Health and Safety: Recipients spent less time in hospitals and were less likely to be involved with the criminal justice system.
  • Smart Choices: Contrary to old-fashioned stereotypes, participants actually spent 12% less on alcohol and tobacco, choosing instead to invest in their futures.

More Than Just Money: It’s About Dignity

One of the most moving stories from the study is Aeryn’s. She used her grant to finally buy the PC she needed for her university studies. For Aeryn, it wasn’t just a piece of tech; it was the tool that allowed her to keep up with her peers and pursue her dreams.

As Professor Michael Sanders from King’s College put it, these grants give young people agency and dignity. It recognizes that they are the experts in their own lives and know best what they need to succeed.

Why This Matters to the Fostering Community

At Banya, we know that fostering doesn’t “end” the moment a young person turns 18 or 21. The bonds formed in a foster home are for life, but the systemic support needs to catch up.

This research is a huge step forward. It shows that by providing even a small “cushion,” we can help prevent the cycle of homelessness and unemployment that too many care leavers face. It’s about giving them the same start in life that any other young person deserves.

Making The Journey Brighter

Currently, a third of care leavers in the UK face homelessness within just two years of leaving care. But studies like this show us there’s a kinder, better way to help. By simply offering direct, dignified support, we can make sure the transition to adulthood feels less like a lonely cliff-edge and more like a steady stepping stone toward a bright future.

We are so proud of the resilience shown by care leavers every day. It’s time the world showed them the same trust and belief that their foster families do.
