At the end of last week, a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, causing devastation in Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman and parts of Panjshir. Homes have been destroyed, lives have been lost, and many families are living with deep uncertainty. This disaster comes at a time when communities in the region are already enduring multiple crises, including the recent forced return of millions of refugees from Pakistan.
At Banya, we know this has touched some of our own foster children and families directly. We have several young people in care, as well as care leavers, who are from the Nangarhar and Laghman regions and we want to reach out to you with love, comfort, and reassurance.
First and foremost: we are here for you. We understand how frightening and upsetting it is to wait for news about loved ones who may have been caught up in the disaster. Please know that at Banya, your feelings matter, and you can always talk to us about your worries, fears, or questions. Talking with your foster carer, social worker, or someone you trust can help.
Banya has always been a family that stretches across countries and cultures. In moments like this, our family grows even stronger. We are holding our Afghan children and their families in our hearts, and we will continue to do all we can to support you.
